The Blood Dance
by Rebecca Laffar-Smith

they washed away the sins
of white men in the blood
of the snake that hissed
and danced the corroboree
with the darkness

gaping smiles
with bloodied teeth
and dirty feet
doused in roo dung
stamped into the rusty earth

the sun refused to shine
hiding them in the shadows
from the whites
whose eyes failed
without the light

they scurried and huddled
in tents out of the downpour
and prayed to an abandoned God
for bullets, stakes and courage
to face the spears at dawn

dead on their bunks
a retribution - a celebration
taken from their sleep
to feed the land
silenced are their children

the dance tells the story
to the pounding rains
to the steady beat
skin on bone struck hard
in the lingering dreamtime
